Frequently asked Questions
What sort of yoga do you do?
I have studied yoga for over 30 years. My first teachers were Iyengar trained and this tends to be quite strong yoga. When I trained as a yoga teacher I was taught a more gentle type of yoga, called viniyoga and was based on using the breath and adapting the poses to suit the individual’s needs. Latterly I have also been influenced by Vanda Scaravelli, an Italian lady who teaches a way of practicing yoga based on the natural principles of gravity and the breath, a gentle way to achieve and maintain health and flexibility.
What do I need to bring with me?
Many students have their own yoga mats, blocks and ties but I have some that you can use. It is also advisable to bring a rug or blanket to act as padding in some of the poses and to keep you warm during the relaxation.
What should I wear?
Loose comfortable and stretchy clothes are best. It is often advisable to wear layers of clothes so you have something warm to wear at the end when we relax.
I have a back problem. Will yoga be suitable for me?
As with any injury or physical problem it is always advisable to consult your doctor before starting yoga. Then tell your yoga teacher what the problem is and she will be able to advise you as to safe ways to perform the poses.
I am not very flexible, does this matter?
No not at all. Yoga isn’t just about trying to twist your legs round your neck! It is very easy to adapt all the poses so that even the least flexible body still obtains benefit from it.
I would like to be a yoga teacher. How can I go about this?
That’s great! You need to have practised yoga for at least 3 years . I am currently running a teachers’ training course which finishes in 2010 so another one will be starting in 2011.
Can yoga help me to lose weight
Yes it can, you will start to feel calmer and happier about your body and this will help you to feel more in control of your eating and keeping to a healthy diet.
